ASK A QUESTION
When should I choose an Auto Level over a Total Station?
Auto Levels are particularly advantageous for tasks requiring precise vertical measurements, such as running bench loops and differential leveling. They generally offer superior accuracy for height/Z values compared to Total Stations in these specific applications. Additionally, Auto Levels are significantly faster to set up for simple elevation readings, making them ideal for quick checks and routine leveling tasks.
How often should I calibrate my Auto Level, and how can I check its calibration?
It is recommended to check the calibration of your Auto Level weekly or after any significant impact or bump. A common method to check calibration is the two-peg test. For optical plummets, you can perform a 120° rotation test: level the tribrach, mark the plummet's position, rotate 120°, and check if it still hits the mark. If it moves in a circle, adjustment is needed.
What is the difference between Air-damping and Magnetic-damping compensators?
Compensators are crucial for automatically leveling the line of sight. Air-damping compensators use air resistance to stabilize the pendulum, offering a simple and reliable mechanism. Magnetic-damping compensators, found in models like the MA-DH series, utilize a magnetic field to quickly and efficiently stop the pendulum's swing, generally resulting in faster settling times and enhanced stability, especially in environments with vibrations.
Is a higher telescope magnification always better for an Auto Level?
While higher magnification, such as the 40x on the MA-K40, allows for longer sighting distances and potentially greater precision, it also results in a narrower field of view. A 32x magnification, present in models like the MA-G32, MA-H32, MA-DH32, MA-DH32L, and MA-E32, is considered an industry standard, offering a good balance between range and field of view for most construction and general surveying tasks. The optimal magnification depends on your specific application and required working distance.
What are the benefits of a Laser Auto Level like the MA-DH32L/MA-DH36L?
Laser Auto Levels, such as the MA-DH32L and MA-DH36L, integrate a red beam laser (635nm) that allows for one-person operation in certain scenarios by projecting a visible level line or point. This feature is particularly useful for tasks requiring quick alignment or for working in low-light conditions, offering an effective range of up to 200m at night. They combine the precision of an optical auto level with the convenience of a laser for enhanced versatility.
How does the IP rating affect the durability of an Auto Level?
The IP (Ingress Protection) rating indicates an instrument's resistance to dust and water. Models with an IP66 rating, like the MA-DH series and MA-E32, offer 'High Level waterproof' protection, making them highly suitable for demanding field conditions, including rainy or very dusty environments. This superior protection ensures greater reliability and longevity compared to models with lower ratings like IP54 or IP55, or IPX6 (MA-K32/MA-K40), which still offer good protection but are less resistant to strong jets of water or prolonged immersion.
My optical plummet won't stay aligned. How often should I calibrate?
Tribrachs are mechanical tools subject to vibration and temperature changes. You should check the calibration weekly or after any significant bump.

The Calibration Test: Level the tribrach, mark the plummet's position on a piece of paper on the ground, rotate the tribrach 120° on the tripod head, and check if the plummet still hits the mark. Repeat for all three positions. If it moves in a circle, the plummet needs adjustment using the internal set screws.

Recommended maintenance schedule:
  • Before each survey session: Quick visual check of the optical plummet crosshair clarity.
  • Weekly: Full 120° rotation test to verify plummet alignment.
  • After any impact or drop: Immediate recalibration before resuming work.
  • Annually: Professional factory calibration for high-precision tribrachs.
Pro Tip: MountLaser's High and Ultra Precision tribrachs feature dust-protected optical plummets, reducing the need for frequent cleaning and recalibration.
Can I use a Leica-style carrier in a non-Leica tribrach?
Generally, yes, provided the tribrach is a standard "Wild-style" (Swiss) base. However, be aware of the Height Offset. Different brands have different "height to the center of the prism" standards.

Always verify your instrument's height constant when mixing brands to avoid vertical errors. MountLaser carriers are manufactured to universal standards, making them compatible with most Swiss and Japanese-style tribrachs.
Why are my foot screws (leveling screws) feeling "gritty"?
This is usually due to fine dust or salt spray getting into the threads. Do not use heavy grease, as it attracts more grit and can cause the leveling mechanism to stick.

Cleaning Procedure: Clean the threads with a dry brush or compressed air. If lubrication is needed, use a tiny amount of dry Teflon/PTFE spray or a high-quality clock oil.

Prevention tips:
  • After each field session, wipe the tribrach base with a dry cloth.
  • Store the tribrach in a protective case or bag.
  • In coastal environments, apply a thin protective film to the foot screws after cleaning.
MountLaser Advantage: Our High-Precision and Ultra-Precision tribrachs feature dust-protected foot screws with sealed threads, reducing maintenance requirements.
Is a laser plummet better than an optical plummet?
It depends on the environment. Both technologies have distinct advantages and trade-offs.

Laser Plummet: Best for indoor, tunnel, night work; low-light conditions. Limitations: Affected by bright sunlight; requires batteries.

Optical Plummet: Best for long-term outdoor use; high reliability; no power dependency. Limitations: Requires clear optics; harder to see in low light.

Many professional surveyors prefer a "Dual Optical" setup for maximum reliability.
